It’s The Weekend Open Thread

Posted By Clairwil On 9th February, 2007 @ 8:26 pm In Uncategorized, Humour, Blog | Comments Disabled

Hello,
All my fellow picklers will be spending Saturday afternoon on a pickle meet. Naturally I was invited (I was! -I can prove it) but London is a bit awkward for me to get to at short notice. So I’m relying on you all to stop me feeling left out and lonely. In other words I’m making a bold bid for attention.

I’ve been off work all week with a touch of the ‘Winston Churchills’ (depression not alcoholism) so I’m a bit bored, though oddly cheery. For some reason the depression goes every time I leave work. Do you think there could be a connection? So I’ll be after cheerful stuff only please. If your dog has left you and your wife has worms you have my sympathy but I don’t wish to hear about it. Sorry but it’s holiday plans, jokes, japes, funny links and pictures of dogs in dinner jackets only.

To kick off the funny stuff I’d like to introduce you to Scottish Hip Hop, more specifically [1] Glaswegian Hip Hop. It’s hard to know how to describe it, though piss yourself hilarious isn’t a bad start. More so when one considers ‘The Schemes’ video was recorded [2] to show another side of Arden after it’s rather grim showing on Channel Five recently. Quite how depicting it as a shithole full of lousy rappers improves things is beyond my understanding. Poor Steg G the tragedy of the man’s life is that coming from Arden just doesn’t conjure up the same danger and swagger as being say being from Compton. As one fellow comments beneath his truly remarkable video ‘I’ve heard better beats watching two boys fighting on the estate’ and I have no doubt he’s right. Beyond parody. Beyond belief.

Apologies for shamelessly promoting my blog. The link in this article is frankly disturbing. Witness this and you need never fear depression again.

There is always someone worse off than you.

Hello Picklers. Ever heard of Kevin Gardner? Probably not. But I bet you’ve heard of Parviz Khan, Basiru Gassama, Amjad Mahmood, Mohammed Irfan, Zahoor Iqbal, and Hamid Elasmar: they were all charged with terrorist offences today.

So why haven’t you heard of Kevin Gardner who was charged with similar terrorist offences yesterday - ‘the collection of information regarding, and preparation for, acts of terrorism’? In fact, why has hardly anyone heard of Kevin Gardner? Full story on my blog.

It seems Indian women are making their mark in the world.

Sunita Williams in the News with her record breaking space walk.
Indra Nooyi now named chairwoman of Pespi
Shilpa Shetty the toast of Great Britain

That is straight out of the sink estate failing comprehensive school of rap. Former star pupils include Robbie Williams and Madonna.

Here’s some Andaluz hip-hop. See what you think:

‘What the hell is a pickle meet?’

The other contributers are all meeting for tea and buns this afternoon, I christened it a pickle meet because I couldn’t think of anything else to call it.

As for the invites they were circulated by e-mail. I’d never have mentioned it if I knew you’d all get cross.

#15 Comment By Sahil On 10th February, 2007 @ 12:47 pm

I’m kidding, Clairwil, BTW where in Glasgew do you live? I used to live in Edinburgh and one of my buddies is doing a PhD there.

#16 Comment By Sahil On 10th February, 2007 @ 1:59 pm

If anyone is interested in my old band, I was 16, let me know, I can try and get some track online, BUT only by popular demand.

This is one of my favourite songs I recorded it off Late Junction radio4. Reminds me of Marlene Dietrich or something off Cabaret or something. Really seductive voice. I did not get the artist or title so I just called it the German Woman. However played it to a freind tonight and he said it sounded yiddish. Does anyone know the artist.

I live in the city centre at High Street. Glad you’re not upset by the meet. I’m sure no offence was meant.

Please keep your clips coming. I’ve not had a chance to view them all yet but they’ll keep me out of mischief when I do.

I couldn’t go to the meet because I have had to WORK all weekend. And I am annoyed about it.

So I am leaving the open thread immediately because otherwise I’m just going to bring you all down, maaaaan.

That Armando Ianucci thing is excellent.

Scottish hip-hop…that clip nearly put me in a trance.

William - I tried the link to relieve my stress, but it crashed my browser, so my stress went up even more!

Happy to see there are other fans of Iannucci’s surreal brain. From Armando’s latest article ‘Never fear, Britons - your civil liberties are safe with us’:

Tony Blair: “Today, I am launching a jihad against snide rumour-mongering.”

Chairwoman Auntie,

=>”Hi Jai, How’s the new job?”

Demanding, but luckily I have a knack for my particular role so I’m enjoying the work. Most of the people are okay, although there are some stereotypical Essex chav types in the more low-level back office functions who don’t seem to be too amenable towards Asians (at least those who are in the more senior/prestigious areas of the industry), but fortunately my contact with them is fairly limited. It’s balanced by the large number of intelligent, professional types who aren’t threatened by successful Asians, luckily.

Depending on which part of the organisation we’re talking about, there is a tendency for some people to be very loud and opinionated. A lot of cockiness and bluff’n'bluster. But there are plenty of calmer, civilised people around too. Generally-speaking, I think you need to be fairly assertive and strong-minded to work in the City, because there’s a lot of aggressive and ambitious folk around who sometimes create a lot of unnecessary friction and office politics.

Nevertheless, the location’s quite glitzy and glamorous anyway, and it’s an exciting industry to work in — financially and professionally the prospects can be outstanding. Some parts of these buildings can literally be like 5-Star hotels inside too — all very plush and luxurious.

Thank you very much for asking, it’s really nice of you :)

*Chairwoman, avert your eyes now*

To everyone else,

Guys, there are a huge number of insanely hot women working in the City ! They’re everywhere. The industry seems to attract a disproportionate number of foxy, strutting, leggy glamorous types. If you’ve ever been in the area during the weekdays (during working hours) then you’ll know what I mean.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that, of course…..

#36 Comment By El Cid On 11th February, 2007 @ 9:12 pm

Bert, er… thanks, I think, for that seminal piece of Spanish shite.

#37 Comment By Bert Preast On 11th February, 2007 @ 10:58 pm

El Cid - Tio, you need to lighten up a bit. Less stiff upper lip?

How about Alazan - Amarrado a mi cintura?

[14] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IROAraFtB6A

For real music though you want the Spicy Shaker version by Julien Carrera. Now this took some finding, so watch it. Though um, I don’t think the vid is original. I’m tired of looking a thread-braking buffoon so the URL is in two parts, and shouldn’t require the brains of an archbishop to work out. Let’s do it:

And have some Ritmo de la Noche for good measure:

Just fantastic. Kismet needs to see ‘em, too.

#38 Comment By El Cid On 12th February, 2007 @ 12:48 pm

You got me wrong Bert
The written word can look more angry than it really is. Simmer down na!
Capitan Canalla is shite in the same way that .. er Black Lace is shite (altogether now.. ah-gah-doo, doo, doo, push pineapple, shake the tree, agadoo-doo-doo, push pineapple, grind coffee)

#39 Comment By Clairwil On 12th February, 2007 @ 1:26 pm

Bloody hell! Is anything going to happen with the scandal here or is Sunny toying with us?

#40 Comment By Bert Preast On 12th February, 2007 @ 3:00 pm

El Cid, you miss the point of both the Capitan and Black Lace. They take shiteness to new levels, where it metamorphosises from a maggot to a slug and becomes a true art form all of it’s own.

Mind, it’s still a hit and miss business - Bicho malo pille is a fine example of how to get it right as is Black Lace. Whereas the Baile de los pajaritos is not and needs a damn good gassing.

*la bar-ba-coa, la barbacoa* Yeah man, groove on down and don’t diss the Dann.

#41 Comment By Sunny On 13th February, 2007 @ 1:24 am
