  • Blogger’s children under attack

    by Rumbold
    7th September, 2010 at 9:44 pm

Tim Ireland, the blogger who helped expose fantasist Glen Jenvey’s false claims about extremist Muslims targeting Sir Alan Sugar, has now reported that his children have become targets of internet smears. This is the latest in a long running campaign to discredit and smear Tim Ireland by various factions.

Glen Jenvey was close to Patrick Mercer, the Conservative MP. When Tim exposed him, the smearing started, with Tim being branded a paedophile. Tim approached Iain Dale for help in warning Patrick Mercer in order to discredit Glen Jenvey, but no help was forthcoming. This situation has continued, with Tory MP Nadine Dorries and others suggesting Tim is a potentially violent stalker (by linking him to the individual who stabbed the MP Stephen Timms).

At times the anti-Iain Dale sentiment of some bloggers is rather overblown. If historians one day reconstruct the blogosphere of this age using others’ posts, they may conclude that the only reason why it was Herod who massacred the innocents was because Iain Dale had to pull out at the last minute to do the Sky News paper review. There is also a lot of bad blood between himself and Tim. But this has gone much too far. A fellow blogger’s children are being threatened. Iain Dale rightly criticised some of the media storm surrounding William Hague. He now needs to do what he can to help Tim Ireland defend his children from these smears.

Update: Iain responds in the comments.

I remember donkeys ago when sunny had NF types putting up his old home address up on asians in media and making calls for fellow haters to go torch it. First time it dawned on me that this internet malarkey wasn’t just all anonymous fun and games

    2. Tim Ireland — on 7th September, 2010 at 10:28 pm

      Thank you.

      From all of us.

    3. Iain Dale — on 7th September, 2010 at 10:34 pm

You write “Tim approached Iain Dale for help in warning Patrick Mercer in order to discredit Glen Jenvey, but no help was forthcoming.”

This is not true, and however many times it is repeated, it doesn’t make it more true.

TI asked me to contact Patrick Mercer. I did just that. I phoned his office to speak to him. I was told he was off ill, laid up with a bad back. I asked his secretary if she was aware of someone called Glen Jenvey. She said yes. I told her they should be very suspicious of him – as Tim had asked me to. She made clear that they already were. Job done, I thought, and I emailed Tim too that effect. I didn’t specifically ask her to pass on that to Patrick as her response indicated that he already was suspicious of Jenvey. Tim now repeatedly accuses me of lying, saying that I made out I had spoken to Mercer when I hadn’t. I did no such thing. I acted out of goodwill, despite all the malicious things he had said about me. He also accuses me of badmouthing him to Mercer. I certainly did that – but not then. After his repeated harassment of me started later in April last year I was talking to Mercer and he mentioned that he and his staff were being plagued by Tim. Join the club, I said. I then learned that Tim was plaguing his secretary on her private mobile phone. Christ alone knows how he got her number.

I have no idea how I am supposed to stop him getting threats to his family. I can quite understand how any threats can be distressing. His own repeated harrassment of me has been distressing to me and my family. 40 phone calls in one night. And they have recently started again.

I have noo idea who is threatening him. All the characters he mentions - Jenvey, Wightman, Cheerleaders etc are all completely unknown to me. I have never spoken to them, met them or had any contact with them whatsoever. He said they were feeding off mentions of him on my blog. So I then deleted every mention of him I could find on my blog and in the comments. He then accused me of trying to delete evidence. I ask you. He accused me of not helping the police find these people. I have no idea how I could help do that but if Guildford Police would like to contact me I would only be too happy to talk to them. Believe me, in the past I have been tempted to contact them myself.

In the past I have tried to reaason with him. But I have learned that for every question you answer, the then asks ten more.

      So I now ignore him.

And from time to time he will add to the 200 blogposts he has written about me with more libellous rubbish. No doubt a few people are taken in by what he says and agree with him that I am the devil incarnate.

And I should probably have ignored this blogpost too and will live to regret it.

      Good post Rumbold.

    5. Tim Ireland — on 8th September, 2010 at 12:51 am

      Dale SPEAKS!

“TI asked me to contact Patrick Mercer. I did just that. I phoned his office to speak to him.”

This is a blatant lie. I asked Iain Dale to contact Patrick Mercer *because messages were not being passed on by his office about the most serious smears you can imagine by someone who had worked closely with Mercer and his staff* which almost anyone would take as a clear sign of complicity if not collusion. Dale contacted the office, instead of calling Mercer. Calling the office was the opposite of what he agreed to do, and I have an email from Iain proving he understood this to be the case. Hell, *anyone* could have called Mercer’s office. I contacted Dale because he was on a list of people likely to have Mercer’s direct phone number, and he understood this, too. Dale agreed to call mercer, cannot have failed to notice that he gave me the impression that Mercer was personally alerted to what was going on, and then lied about it.

“I was told he was off ill, laid up with a bad back.

Dale has told others that the reason he called the office and not Mercer *in the first place* was because Mercer was off with a bad back. Now he says he called the office in the first instance, and didn’t bother going any further because the people who were not acting on smears of paedophilia gave a weak medical excuse. A bad back stops you from answering the phone, does it? Dale would accept this excuse without question from anyone in these circumstances, would he? Somehow, I doubt it.

“I asked his secretary if she was aware of someone called Glen Jenvey. She said yes. I told her they should be very suspicious of him – as Tim had asked me to. She made clear that they already were. Job done, I thought, and I emailed Tim too that effect. I didn’t specifically ask her to pass on that to Patrick as her response indicated that he already was suspicious of Jenvey.”

It has taken OVER A YEAR for Iain Dale to share this level of detail. Previous to this, he has refused to discuss what he said to who, and portrayed my multiple attempts to find out as stalking. Mercer later claimed his staff did not pass on any messages about Jenvey and his smears. Because Dale and Mercer and his staff all refused to talk, I had no choice but to proceed without their cooperation.

Note also that his account shows that HE DID NOT EVEN MENTION THE PAEDO SMEARS, WHICH WAS THE *PURPOSE* OF THE CALL! I’m surpised he didn’t pause for a brief chat about the bloody weather. Dale also says he did not even ask them to pass the message on (!!), when he knew the original and urgent task was to reach Mercer, because no messages were being passed on. Remember, I was being repeatedly smeared as a convicted paedophile at the time, and Jenvey was threatening to escalate with the publication of my address alongside this dangerous smear. Mercer needed to be alerted to this ASAP.

“Tim now repeatedly accuses me of lying, saying that I made out I had spoken to Mercer when I hadn’t.”

This is exactly what Iain Dale did, as I have explained. It is not down to a difference of opinion, because Dale understood he needed to call Mercer because something untoward was happening in his office. Instead, he called theoffice, and didn’t even ask them to pass a message on!

” I did no such thing. I acted out of goodwill, despite all the malicious things he had said about me. He also accuses me of badmouthing him to Mercer. I certainly did that – but not then.”

Bless his restraint. He is a saint. Even if he only did it after this crucial day, it still stopped Mercer from trusting me with information about Wightman during the relevant police investigation. That did a LOT of damage and ultimately led to a failure to prosecute.

“After his repeated harassment of me started later in April last year I was talking to Mercer and he mentioned that he and his staff were being plagued by Tim. Join the club, I said. I then learned that Tim was plaguing his secretary on her private mobile phone. Christ alone knows how he got her number.”

Again, this is detail Dale is only just sharing after over a year of avoiding the issue. The claim that I ‘plagued’ anyone is a damaging lie. Mercer’s secretary was called *once* on a mobile phone number she had posted herself to a public bulletin board inviting contact. Mercer’s office phone was going to the answering machine and calls went unreturned for days on a matter of extreme urgency, so I tried an alternative number. Surprise, surprise, the office was open, and she was screening her calls, and dodging mine. This led to long delays, BTW, because I did not dare call with any frequency after the stunt Dale pulled crying ‘stalker’ while avoiding all mention of the paedophile smears he saw fit not to report to Mercer as he agreed to do. She said she did not wish to be called on that number so I did not call it again, despite this leading to further delays, because she then continued to ignore messages sent via Mercer’s office. And I had a bloody good reason to press these people for answers. For them to suggest they were the victims is absurd and insulting in the extreme. Ditto for Dale.

“I have no idea how I am supposed to stop him getting threats to his family. I can quite understand how any threats can be distressing. His own repeated harrassment of me has been distressing to me and my family. 40 phone calls in one night. And they have recently started again.”

I deny that I have ever harassed Iain Dale in the legal sense, ever. He has certainly taken no credible steps to establish that I have, so why he keeps repeating the claim when he says Coulson (for example) is innocent until proven guilty suggests - at best - rank hypocrisy. Iain Dale also insists that the Guildford activists working under Anne Milton are innocent of any wrong doing over their attempts to smear a Lib Dem as a paedophile because no court case eventuated.

But in my case, he will delcare that I am guilty of stalking and harassment, when he hasn’t even launched a civil case.

Iain Dale was, at the same time as refusing my calls, running with moderation off on his site and allowing all manner of negative comments about me. He could have switched on moderation at any time, but chose to keep the channel open, because it suited his purposes, especially when it came to the smearing of Tom Watson:
      http://www.bloggerheads.com/archives/2009/10/how_iain_dale_l/

He was also refusing to cooperate with a criminal investigation into Jenvey’s actions at the time, which covers me both morally and legally - a serious lie of omission from Dale then and now. At the time, Dale even refused to verify delivery of a single email requesting his cooperation with the relevant statement. (Silence from Mercer’s office was greatly frustrating matters; Dale refused to discuss this or even if he had received any of the paedo-smear comments. He still refuses to confirm or deny being a recipient of any of these comments, and is the ONLY political blogger who has behaved in this way; everybody else was very keen to help, and even Phil Hendren answered my questions about suspected submissions from Jenvey.)

It is wrong for Dale to suggest that recent calls happened with any undue frequency. I called him a few times over the past few days for comment on recent developments. He once told me to ‘fuck off’ (which was nice), hung up, or laughed at me.

“I have noo idea who is threatening him. All the characters he mentions – Jenvey, Wightman, Cheerleaders etc are all completely unknown to me. I have never spoken to them, met them or had any contact with them whatsoever.”

Dale won’t confirm or deny if he received communications in the form of comments from Jenvey. He knows Wightman and the Cheerleaders operated anonymously and under multiple pseudonyms and he can make no guarantees about what these people may or may not have communicated to him under various guises on his blog, where he regularly allows anonymous comments, but only when they attack his critics. More on this point shortly. Dale refuses to acknowledge that his accusations were being repeated alongside my home address, and that he persisted making these claims privately and refusing to retract them publicly, even in this dangerous climate, despite multiple warnings about what was going on.

Instead, he (privately) portrayed these attempts as evidence of stalking.

“He said they were feeding off mentions of him on my blog. So I then deleted every mention of him I could find on my blog and in the comments.”

This did not happen until long after I pleaded with him to *retract* false claims on his site when Jenvey was highly agitated by these claims and recognised by police as being in a suicidal state. It is damning in itself that Dale’s site was the ONLY place where such claims existed in any great number (i.e. that I was in league with Labour/gov, part of Draper’s dirty trick gang, etc.); even Paul Staines had the sense to remove them months before. And his removal was not as widespread as he would have you and others believe:
      http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=site:iaindale.blogspot.com+%22tim+ireland%22

118 mentions. Took me seconds to find, and plenty appear to be negative. And he deleted all he could find? Riiiight.

“He then accused me of trying to delete evidence. I ask you.”

He deleted some entries. He did not retract ANY of it. Dale knows a deletion is not a retraction and that the main problem was the echo of his claims after they left his site. This was clearly explained to him through his lawyer, and Dale KNEW he was privately defending as opinion what was being repeated elsewhere as fact.

The main entry he deleted was the entirely unsupported claim that I had stalked him, threatened him, and intended to impair his site with a DOS attack (he called is a ‘DNS’ attack, bless). One of the few things he deleted was the series of false claims he could not and cannot support with evidence, and he made it appear as if the event had never happened.

” He accused me of not helping the police find these people. I have no idea how I could help do that but if Guildford Police would like to contact me I would only be too happy to talk to them. Believe me, in the past I have been tempted to contact them myself.”

But he didn’t. Strange for someone who claims to have been victimised in the way he describes. The time Dale could have been the most help in this specific matter was a very long time ago. The IP record of access to his site for the purpose of leaving comments, for example, is long gone by now. Strikingly convenient.

Above, Dale claimed never to have heard from any of the Cheerleaders. A one stage, Cheerleading ringleader named Charlie Flowers claimed to be acting on behalf of Dale (and others) and further claimed that he had contacted Dale about this, implying he was axcting with Dale’s blessing. (Sunny Hundal can confirm this.) Dale refused to confirm or deny this, refusing to cooperate with a second police investigation, and refusing to even to discredit a man who was publicly claiming his blessing.

How Dale can help *now* can only be established/discussed via a wider, *private* conversation about my intention to prosecute people who are most likely reading this exchange. If he wants to conduct this through an intermediary to avoid having to speak with me directly, I have already suggested this many times, and this offer has always been refused.

“In the past I have tried to reaason with him. But I have learned that for every question you answer, the then asks ten more.”

I tend to do that when the first answer is misleading, or is otherwise of a nature that raises more questions. As for the number of follow-up questions, I suspect exaggeration of figures.

      “So I now ignore him.”

In between foul-mouthed outbursts, attacks by his friends that we can attribute to coincidence, multiple negative comments about me that he allowed on his site, and repeats of the false implication that I threatened him with violence, and/or was capable of same.

“And from time to time he will add to the 200 blogposts he has written about me with more libellous rubbish. No doubt a few people are taken in by what he says and agree with him that I am the devil incarnate.”

Iain Dale has NEVER been able to specify any lies or libel on my site. But I can identify multiple instances on his.

As for the count of entries, here’s 349 mentions of Ken Livingstone on Iain Dale’s site. Is Iain Dale stalking Ken Livingstone?
      http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=site:iaindale.blogspot.com+%22ken+livingstone%22

Dale writes about politics, I write about political blogging. He cannot court publicity as a leading political blogger and only accept good attention, though he does try.

“And I should probably have ignored this blogpost too and will live to regret it.”

We can only hope that Dale will discover regret within himself soon (in ways he apparently can’t even imagine at the moment).

    6. Tim Ireland — on 8th September, 2010 at 1:10 am

PS - Having browsed through what Iain still has on this site, I find claims I am “mentally disturbed”, a “crazy stalker”, specific claims about my stalking/harassing Anne Milton and Nadine Dorries, and attempts to tie me to Derek Draper that Iain Dale knows are entirely unsupported by evidence. In fact, while Dale was happy to take Draper out to lunch, I was busy warning people about him… and getting smeared by him as an obsessive stalker as my reward.

    7. Sunny — on 8th September, 2010 at 2:48 am

Iain and Tim - this ‘he says and is lying’ stuff is endless and very circular.

I think the best way forward is to at least stay out of each other’s way and go back to the beginning.

Tim - what would you like from Iain Dale now to stop this online harassment? Would could he do from his side?

And if Iain is willing to do that, we can at least put that behind us because this whole shit is getting serious and we’re still talking about what happened over 2 years ago. I’m sure we agree that isn’t going to help anything.

    8. Kismet Hardy — on 8th September, 2010 at 7:54 am

I don’t know who either of these dudes are, but I suggest a one-to-one pint is probably long overdue

      Iain:

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I appreciate that, as you didn’t have to.

      Tim:

Echoing Sunny’s question, what do you want Iain to do now to help stop the harrassment of your children? Not what he has done in the past, but what can he do now?

You also need to stop phoning him.

    10. cjcjc — on 8th September, 2010 at 8:44 am

When you read their blogs, Dale comes across as quite reasonable while Ireland comes across as a bit obsessive and paranoid.

      Shows how much I know.

    11. Tim Ireland — on 8th September, 2010 at 9:56 am

Sunny: Dale’s conduct show he is play-acting wit this harassment stuff. In any instance and I have a number, when it is urgent, I will call instead of email. In Dale’s case,. even before all of this, he would pretend to had ‘missed’ urgent emails, even before he was pretending to ignore me (while attacking me online and/or through his mates). Perhaps it was careless of me to be manipulated into this position, but please do not give Dale’s hysteria over calls too much credit.

If Dale seriously wants to help, he can publicly retract his claim of stalking, or at least clarify that he bases it on what it felt like to him, not on any legal action/confirmation, he can discredit Flowers by saying he never received any communication from that man and and certainly doesn’t approve of his methods, and he can begin to cooperate/communicate *privately* so we can sort this out without cluing in the people I intend to prosecute, and without my having to air all the ****ed-up details of the fallout from their actions, which are difficult to appreciate at the best of times.

cjcjc: “Ireland comes across as a bit obsessive and paranoid.”

      See last comment above, for a rare answer to this notorious troll. As RB pointed out yesterday;

“… The more that Tim is forced to explain and complain, the more they point and mock him as an obsessive. The more that Tim is forced to explain and complain, the more they point and mock him as an obsessive. ”

      “Notorious”? Wow.

Where has this smear appeared, btw?
On a blog read by 2 men and a dog?

It seems amazing to me that you appear to be singled out for smearing even though (as far as I can see - please put me right) none of your explosive revelations has had any real effect on anyone.
I mean Dorries, Dale, Mercer and whoever else is in your sights seem to be sailing on quite happily.

If this smearing is routine Tory (or whomever) practice then surely it must be happening to others?

    14. Kismet Hardy — on 8th September, 2010 at 10:31 am

      a) targeting someones children as a way of getting at them is a disgusting tactic no matter who the target is.

      b) “which marks the latest phase of a long running campaign to discredit and smear Tim Ireland by various factions, including the Conservative MP Nadine Dorries”

Rumbold - I think that could be better phrased, unless you are saying that there is a single campaign against Tim, that targeting his kids is ‘the latest phase’ and that Nadine Dorries is involved with it.

After all, Nadine’s been the target of stick from various leftie bloggers including Tim - I wouldn’t necessarily lump those together as one campaign. My personal view (from a position of total ignorance) is that it’s very unlikely that Conservative Party activists (or MPs) are doing this, or that they know who is. I certainly hope they don’t - twould be a shameful thing.

Ah, how refreshing to find someone who looks at how our dear political enterprises operate through the rosiest of tinted spectacles…

For the record, I’m a crime reporter who has done a stint working in social services, children’s department.
I’ve covered stories involving the accusation of paedophilia from investigation, to arrest, to court and afterwards. I’ve spoken to officers, counsellors, social workers, victims.

Without doubt, the accusation of being a paedophile is THE most damaging accusation you can ever face. In some cases, mere the accusation has resulted in children’s services being involved in the accused person’s family set up.

It is incredulous to me that someone who clearly, undoubtedly had a strong element of influence, regardless of their hatred, dislike or bitterness, would make a casual effort. There is right and there is wrong.

It is also undoubtedly a part of why Tim, the accused, should - in some very unempahtic people’s eyes - appear to go overboard and deluge the person who had influence with requests to really get stuck in.

Tim, having met him, having cyber-known him for a number of years is not a whack job. I’ve met more than enough in my line of work over the past decade and a bit to know the difference.

He’s clearly a person who focuses in very hard, very intensely on an issue and, terrier-like, will not let go until he’s satisfied he’s got the bottom of the issue. He does not strike me as the kind of man to regularly make casual, light, silly comments. When he has, I’ve even seen him pick himself up on them when challanged.

Let me reiterate from the perspective of someone who deals with this as part of my daily work. Being accused of paedophilia on such a powerful tool as the internet (not just once, but hunderds of times) is a truly damaging act. Some men have been overwhelmed by the pressure this causes and - as I have reported in the past - taken their own lives, have lost their relationships, their children, their jobs, their standing in their community REGARDLESS OF THE OUTCOME OF POLICE INVESTIGATIONS AND/OR COURT CASES.

I won’t posit the question ‘what would Jesus do’ being a typical heathen. But I would posit to each and every one of you who know or read Dale or Ireland to ask yourselves ‘what would the right thing to do, what would be the decent, human, empathic thing to do?’ Would it be to make such a casual effort to help a fellow human being who maybe once you did regard, or would it be right and proper, now that bad blood has been spilt over something as pathetic as politics to taint your judgement and effort?

My regard for Iain has diminished not because he swears at me, not because he has belittled me, taken the piss or sneered at me on his blog. That’s the result of part of what I do as a living and part of what often happens when you comment on someone else’s blog.

But truly, truly, I regard him less for not stepping to one-side and recognising the power he had to stop Tim’s torment - because torment is what it is - and that he acted (to my mind) so casually and carelessly when the opportunity presented itself. It was shameful for him to weild his undoubted power, influence, connections and morality in such a cursory way.

But hey, that’s just my thoughts, and what are they worth, eh?

Oh, and one quick add Iain.

You suggestion of “more libellous rubbish” on Tim’s site…

Give me a call when you want a lesson in libel, I will give it freely, without malice, with good grace and in a true spirit of fairness. No joke.

I say that because, perhaps, you haven’t learned one since the Daily Mail had to pay out that sum thanks to your article…

Carl Eve :“I regard him less for not stepping to one-side and recognising the power he had to stop Tim’s torment”

I’m obviously behind the curve on this - but why does Iain have that power - given that he’s said “I have no idea who is threatening him” ?

The majority of the comments here illustrate the problem, a huge disconnect between Tim’s reality and commentators own personal prejudice.

A total lack of empathy being shown.

      Totally disappointing and totally predictable.
